Launched in 1959, the USS George Washington Class submarines were lengthened Skipjack submarines.  They were cut in half and a 130' center section was added to accommodate the 16 Polaris missile tubes.  A "turtle back" was also added to allow for the additional depth needed for the missile tubes.

The USS George Washington was far superior to anything the Soviets had at the time.  Each Polaris missile carried a one-megaton warhead that could be delivered against targets 1200 nautical miles away.

By comparison the Soviets only carried 3 missiles with only a few hundred miles in range and they were far less accurate.

She was also the first vessel to use the innovative Blue-and-Gold crew concept.  This allowed her to spend more time at sea as she always had one crew working aboard while the other was ashore.
